Logline
A determined Venezuelan immigrant rises as an underground fighter, only to be hunted by a ruthless border agent with a deadly secret. When the agent is exposed, the immigrant must choose between running or standing his ground to fight for his future.
Synopsis
Oscar, a desperate Venezuelan immigrant, crosses the U.S. border illegally in a last-ditch effort to fund his mother’s life-saving surgery. But his journey turns deadly when he witnesses a tragic confrontation: a border patrol agent, Chad, accidentally kills his own partner during a migrant roundup. Oscar narrowly escapes and goes into hiding, haunted by what he saw and terrified of what might come next.
Now living in the shadows, Oscar takes on grueling labor jobs until he’s drawn into the violent underground fight circuit. Under the mentorship of Carlos, a hardened but loyal former fighter, Oscar transforms into a fierce competitor. With each brutal bout, he climbs the ranks, earning enough money to send home and cover his mother’s operation. Along the way, he falls in love with Gina, a fiery and compassionate woman whose belief in him offers a glimmer of hope for a future beyond the bloodshed.
Meanwhile, Chad becomes obsessed with tracking down Oscar, the one man who could expose the truth. With Krystal, his new and suspiciously observant partner, they close in on Oscar’s whereabouts. As Krystal’s unease with Chad’s ruthless tactics grows, Oscar’s success in the ring only makes him a bigger target.
After a major fight, Chad and Krystal corner Oscar in the locker room. In a desperate bid for leverage, Chad takes Gina hostage, forcing Oscar into a final confrontation that ends with Chad’s secrets revealed—and Krystal forced to make a life-altering choice. Torn between her duty and the horrifying truth, Krystal makes the fateful choice to shoot Chad, saving Oscar.
Though exonerated, Oscar refuses to run, choosing instead to face the consequences of his irregular entry.
Tone & Style
Wake is a moody, character-driven drama in the vein of Ordinary People, August: Osage County, and Manchester by the Sea. Shot with intimate cinematography, natural light, and still compositions, the film lives in emotional nuance. The setting—a lakefront house in Connecticut—serves as both a sanctuary and a haunting.
